Here is one way to begin introducing aliveness at a very low level of resistance into your Aikido training. For this drill, it is crucial to remember to switch to boxing defense (see next video) if Uke closes in from this wider distance (ma-ai). Find out how much aliveness, experimentation and play have in common with the Aiki spirit by adding these drills into your open mat, Jiyu Waza or Randori training!

Here is one way to begin introducing aliveness at a very low level of resistance into your Aikido training. Mixed Martial Aikido - The art of fighting without fighting! It is very important to notice (and feel) the distinction between a wider Aikido Ma-ai and Boxing Ma-ai where we are right within striking range. The safest place to be is either outside of striking range waiting for the attacker to lose their center with an over-committed attack - or tied up in the clinch. Use a basic boxing defense and Rodney King's Crazy Monkey Defense to build confidence in defending against alive strikes. Practice mindfulness by using your breath to relax (no wincing!) and stay present while incrementally increasing the intensity until you can stay mentally and emotionally still in the face of full contact attacks (the eye of the hurricane). This is an important practice for your mental game (stress inoculation/raising the "fight or flight" threshold).

Focusing on Aikikai Philadelphia and Henry Smith Shihan (6th dan), the film guides the viewer through a process that illuminates and clarifies how the study of martial arts can benefit anyone's spiritual and physical health.

In this video Stanley Pranin offers his views on some particulars of aikido's Shihonage (four-corner throw). He discusses the generation of mechanical energy to disrupt uke's balance through positioning, and arm and body movement, atemi, kiai, etc. Next, is a discussion of the positioning of the hands on uke's arm to execute Shihonage. He proposes that a common hand placement used is ineffective and suggests using the teachings of Morihei Ueshiba and Morihiro Saito as models. Finally, a comparison of some differences in the execution of Shihonage omote and ura are presented.
